M. A. Wazed Miah was a renowned Bangladeshi physicist and the husband of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Born on February 16, 1942, in Pirganj, Rangpur, Wazed Miah, affectionately known as ‘Sudha Miah’, made significant contributions to the field of physics and played a crucial role in the scientific community of Bangladesh.
Wazed Miah completed his primary and secondary education in Rangpur, excelling in his studies from an early age. He graduated from Dhaka University with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Physics, securing top positions in both. His academic journey continued at Imperial College London and Durham University, where he earned his PhD in theoretical particle physics.
In 1963, Wazed Miah began his career at the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission and later worked at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Italy. After returning to Bangladesh, he became the chief scientist at the Karachi Nuclear Power Plant. Despite facing challenges during the liberation war, he resumed his work at the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission and eventually became its Chairman, retiring in 1999.
Wazed Miah’s marriage to Sheikh Hasina in 1967 marked a significant chapter in his life. Despite his wife’s political prominence, he remained dedicated to his scientific pursuits. The couple had two children, Sajeeb Wazed Joy and Saima Wazed Putul.
Throughout his career, Wazed Miah published several influential books, including “Fundamentals of Electromagnetics” and “Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibke Ghire Kichhu Ghatana O Bangladesh”. He also held various leadership roles in scientific organizations, contributing to the advancement of science in Bangladesh.
Wazed Miah’s legacy continues through numerous institutions named in his honor, such as the Wazed Miah Science Research Centre at Jahangirnagar University and the Dr. M. A. Wazed Miah Institute of Advanced Studies at Jashore University of Science and Technology.
Dr. M. A. Wazed Miah passed away on May 9, 2009, and was laid to rest in his native village. His contributions to science and his dedication to improving the lives of people in Bangladesh remain a testament to his enduring impact.
